The container cargo volume in March and the first quarter of this year, tallied by Busan Port Authority (BPA, President Lim Ki-tack) on the 28th reached its highest monthly and quarterly record ever.
The container cargo volume through Busan Port in March was 1.63 million TEU, a 1.9% increase YoY and is the highest monthly figure.
Import and export cargoes were up 1.8% compared to the previous year, while transshipment cargo grew 1.9%. The import and export cargo volume handled at Busan Port in March set a record and the figure exceeded T/S cargo volume by 14,000 TEU for the first time this year.
Cargo volume in 1Q15 was 4.7million TEU, a 5.7% increase YoY and was also the highest quarterly record.
The ratio of T/S cargo in 1Q by nation is as follows: China (0.41484 million TEUs), U.S.A. (0.325035 million TEU), Japan (0.295392 million TEU), and Europe (0.254797 million TEU). While the U.S.A., and Europe increased year on year 6.3% and 2.2% respectively, China, Japan and Russia decreased 0.6%, 10.6% and 19%, respectively.
The cargo handling ratio between Busan New Port and North Port in 1Q was 66 to 34 from 64 to 36 last year. Cargo volume at Busan North Port increased by handling 1.69021 million TEU in 1Q15 increasing 3.1% YOY and New Port processed 3.1086 million TEU increasing 7.2%.
A BPA official stated, "We will solidify the status of Busan Port as the largest transshipment hub port in Northeast Asia by attracting T/S cargo which contributes greatly to the cargo volume increase. Moreover, we will pay close attention to the rapid growth of Chinese ports and global alliances including 2M and O3."
