Road freight and logistics transport workers solidarity in South Korea has taken a vote for a general strike.
The ballot took place between February 4 to 12 to readjust freight rates and standard freight schemes, obtain the workers' right to work and reform the laws for the trucking business and the road traffic act. The vote counting started at 9 pm on Feb 12.
As a result, the results of the poll and the ratio for favor to commence the strike reached an overwhelming 80.6%. A total of 10,590 people had the right to vote with 6,012 of them (56.7%) actually voting. The detailed results are as follows:
A representative from the solidarity organization said, "We're continuing to struggle without a break to improve logistics transport workers' working environment and quality of life," and, "The strike is concerned with the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions' core struggle."
After the vote, the solidarity organization held a press conference on February 15 and announced its demands to the government for legal improvements as well as plans to strike and an accompanying schedule. < 김보람 기자 brkim@ksg.co.kr >
