Tacoma, August volumes up, exports remain strong
The Port of Tacoma’s year-to-date container volumes through August are up 2 percent, with the Port handling 963,537 TEU. Full export container volumes increased 15 percent through August, reflecting the continued strength of lumber, hay and forage exports.
Full import container volumes are down 2 percent. The lack of US consumer confidence, due to economic uncertainty, is also contributing to the decline of Asian imports up and down the West Coast. In August, the US consumer confidence level was at its lowest point since February 2009.
Other year-to-date cargo highlights include :
- Auto imports are up 50 percent, reflecting strong Kia sales and the rebound of auto production in Japan.
- Breakbulk tonnage is up 69 percent, driven by the strength of agricultural and construction machinery exports.
- Tons of cargo (excluding grain) handled increased 12 percent.
- Grain exports are down about 2 percent (4,015,976 tons).
