Largest ship built in Brazil launched at Atlantico Shipyard
Samsung Heavy Industries Earns Royalties of USD 29 Million by Exporting its Shipyard Operating Expertise and Drawings
On May 8, 2010, Samsung Heavy Industries hosted a successful launch ceremony for the first of its ten 15,000 t-class oil tankers at Atlantico Shipyard, in Brazil. President Lula of Brazil, the CEO of Petrobras, the national oil corporation of Brazil, the CEO of Transpetro, the government-run marine transportation company of Brazil, and CEO In-Sik Roh of Samsung Heavy Industries attended the ceremony, which was joined by more than 1,000 guests. The ten ships are being built through technology transfer by Samsung Heavy Industries.
As the ship that was launched is the largest ship built in Brazil, it will be named ?uan Candido,?who was a hero of the Brazilian Navy, and President Lula and the leaders of various national corporations celebrated the launch of the ship.
After Samsung Heavy Industries selected Atlantico as a strategic partner to approach the Brazilian market in 2006, it entered into a wide-ranging collaboration agreement for technical support in the construction of a shipyard and supply of drawings for shipbuilding.
Under the agreement, Samsung Heavy Industries has exported a drawing for a 15,000 t-class standard oil tanker, and provided knowledge on safety management and procurement, as well as worker training for shipbuilding techniques and skills development, in order to improve the efficiency of shipyard
operation and build high-quality ships.
This technical support brought royalty income to Samsung Heavy Industries amounting to USD 29 million. SHI has since entered into an additional technical service contract with Atlantico worth USD 10 million, for the building of an 11,000 t-class mid-size oil tanker.
Completed at the end of 2009 with technical support from SHI, Atlantico Shipyard is the largest shipyard in South America. It is equipped with a large dock with a length of 400 m and a width of 73 m, on a site with an area of 160,000㎡, and two units of 1,500 t-class goliath cranes. Atlantico Shipyard emerged as the nation? No. 1 shipbuilder by winning shipbuilding orders for the following two years. <Korea Shipping Gazette>
