Hapag-Lloyd increases shipping rate on main container routes
The rate erosion for Far East services already apparent in 2008 has continued into 2009. In the meantime, freight rates worldwide have reached a level that no longer covers costs. Hapag-Lloyd has decided to raise rates in important trades in order to be able to continue to offer customers the accustomed reliable service and a comprehensive liner network.
New tariff rates for incoming services from East Asia, based on Hong Kong to Mediterranean / Europe (westbound trade) will be $1,000 per TEU, $2,000 per FEU and $2,100 per 40' high cube container with effect from April 1st, 2009. At the same time new tariff rates for services from Europe to Asia will be implemented: $250 (TEU) resp. $500 (FEU). These rates include the bunker and currency surcharge. Further increases are planned for both directions in the course of this year.
Rates for services from Canada, US East Coast, Gulf and Mexico to and from Europe or the Mediterranean will be raised by $160 per TEU and $200 per FEU from April 1st, 2009.
To and from the US West Coast rates will be increased by $240 per TEU and $300 per FEU. For refrigerated containers rates will increase by $240 per TEU and $300 per FEU to and from Canada, the US East Coast, Gulf and Mexico. To and from the US West Coast, the respective increase is $400 per TEU and 500 per FEU.
Rates for services from Europe to Oceania (Australia/New Zealand/Pacific) will be increased by ??200 per TEU and ??400 per FEU as of May 1st, 2009.<Korea Shipping Gazette>
