DSME branches out into high-end cruise ship building
Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering(DSME) is setting its sights on building cruise ships as a new growth engine.
As part of its business strategy, DSME formed the Cruise Ship Project Team and is keen to secure core high technology. Active R&D efforts and joint research projects are currently underway with domestic universities and research centers alike.
The Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy of Korea has also decided to offer full-fledged support to local shipyards to advance into the cruise ship manufacturing business. The government together with major local shipbuilders shares the hope that building cruise ships will become a new growth engine and accordingly have agreed to make contributions to the development of a base technology fund. Total contributions amount to approximately 22 billion won.
DSME is to take part in the development of vibration & noise research for cruise ships.
In regards to interior design and construction technology development, those will be dealt with by six organizations together with DSME's subsidiary company DSC (DSME Construction).
When it comes to experience building cruise ships, DSME has built a total of 7 Ro-Ro passenger vessels so far, the most of any company in the Korean ship building industry.
