[ P&O Nedlloyd Names First Vessel for 1998 ]
P&O Nedlloyd has celebrated its first year in business with the naming
of a new ship, heralding the delivery of a number of new vessels that
will come into service in 1998.
The P&O Nedlloyd Arica, a 2,160TEU containership, was launched and nam
ed recently at the Flender shipyard in Luebeck, Germany, and will be a
ssigned to the company’s LAMCON services after its completion in Marc
h, sailing between the Far East and South America and replacing an exi
sting charter ship on the route.
The ship is the sixth from the Flender yard chartered by P&O Nedlloyd
from Reederei Claus Peter Offen, Hamburg; four further vessels was wil
l be charter from them during the year.
Classified by Germanischer Lloyd and meeting SOLAS 11-2 Regulation 54,
the 183-meter-long, 29 meterwide ship is powered by MAN B&W 6 S 60 en
gines, has a service speed of 20 knots and is fitted reefer plugs.
P&O Nedlloyd will take delivery of further ships in 1998, including fo
ur 6,600TEU vessels and five 2,900TEU vessels
