APL to Provide “World-Class” Logistics for AlliedSignal
Oakland, California, June 3, 1997 - APL Limited said its business
logistics unit will manage the domestic transportation and logistics
needs in North America for the Polymers division of AlliedSignal
Inc., serving as a third-party contract logistics provider.
AlliedSignal’s polymers business, which is based near Richmond,
Virginia, is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of fibers,
plastics and chemicals used in a wide variety of sporting goods and
apparel.
From an operations center in Chesterfield County, Virginia, APL
logistics personnel will oversee freight management from eight plants
to distribution centers and AlliedSignal customers throughout North
America. APL will manage outbount and inbound truckload and
less-than-truckload operations, as well as dry bulk-truck and
dispatch operations.
“We expect APL’s logistics expertise will enhance the overall
effectiveness of our transportation and logistics operations,”said
John M. Hutchins, AlliedSignal’s vice president for system resource
management. “Our customers will get better reliability in service
and have easier access to logistical information. The benefits will
be more cost-effective and flexible transportation options. We intend
to develop world-class logistical capabilities.”
This is the first time the Polymers division has selected a
third-party logistics provider to manage its transportation and
logistics in North America.
Neil O’Connell, managing director of APL’s business logistics
group, said his team will incorporate leading-edge technologies in
the transportation-management operation it will implement for
alliedsignal. These will include EDI-based tracking and tracing,
real-time order-entry interface, freight optimization, performance
and management reporting, and data delivery by Internet.
