Pusan port expects to pass 10 million TEU this month
Pusan port that handled cargoes over 10 million TEU last year for the first time expects to pass 10 million TEU on Nov 20~25 this year.
According to Busan Port Authority (BPA) Nov 11, Pusan port handled 8,367,933 TEU from January to September this year, up 8.3% compared to last year.
According to these figures, the port should break the 10 million TEU mark around Nov. 20~25, a month ahead of last year's performance.
Pusan port expects to handle 11,000,000~12,200,000 TEU this year, a fair portion over last year's 10,400,000 TEU.
But container handling increase rates predicted to decrease to 8%, down 2.1% compared to last year. So Pusan port expects to maintain its current position as the world's fifth busiest port.
An insider at BPA said, "It is a fact that Pusan port's T/S cargoes have been decreasing along with Chinese port progress, but as Japanese T/S cargoes increased by 23.6% and Chinese cargoes increase rapidly, Pusan port could easily pass 10,000,000 TEU."
He also said, "Pusan New Port will be open in 2006. We will make it a high value-added port. Through Pusan New Port, we plan to make Pusan a hub for Northeast Asian logistics
