Gwangyang Port cargoes increases will take time
Kim Young Nam, vice-minister of MOMAF (Ministry of Maritime Affaires & Fisheries), announced August 23 that Gwangyang Port would go on with development.
Vice-minister Kim said in a press conference, "Gwangyang Port has been under development for only for 2 years, so we have to wait for that increasing cargoes a little longer," and added, "In the case of foreign ports, cargo increases take over 5 years to materialize, so we expect Gwangyang Port will see increased cargoes after 7 years."
He also stated that Pusan Port should prepare for situations such as when Japan a nearby reserve port when it suffered the Kobe terrible shock."
Meanwhile, he predicted that Gwangyang Port couldn't increase cargoes because of regionalism.
He explained that Malaysia offers various incentives for foreign shipping companies to attract cargoes from Singapore. In the case of a new port like Gwangyang Port, cargoes increase through keen management. But, cargoes couldn't increase because of objections from Pusan Port.
"Singapore didn't suffer although many cargoes left for Malaysia," and Kim continued, "Singapore plans to construct more ports."
