Hanjin Shipping opens company for Pyoungtaek container terminal operations
Hanjin Shipping started operations at Pyongtaek container terminal on August 19. Hanjin Shipping established a new corporation and appointed Choi Geon Sik, executive director of Hanjin Shipping, as the executive representative for the company. It took on 6 employees in July after being selected as the Pyongtaek Port container terminal operator in April of this year.
An official at Hanjin Shipping explained, "East terminal 5 and 6 berths have an area of 192,000 square meters, capable of simultaneously taking two 30 thousand ton class vessels," and continued, "The terminal will start operating in the beginning of November."
Hanjin Shipping formed a consortium with Hanjin Transportation Co., Ltd., Sinorkor Merchant Marine Co., Ltd., KCTC, Sinotrans, Kyunggi province office, Pyongtaek City, Dole Korea, 7 other companies, and a regional self-governing body. The consortium was selected as the terminal operator for Pyongtaek Port in April this year.
The Hanjin group invested capital into the consortium for 37% (Hanjin Shipping 25%). Hanjin Shipping has a lease on the terminal from 2005 to 2009.
The opening ceremony was attended by various business executives and officials including Kim Young Min, vice-president of Hanjin Shipping, Choi Geon Sik, representative for the Pyongtaek container terminal, Son Hak Geu, the Kyunggi provincial governor, Jeong Hong Pyongtaek, the Regional Maritime Affaires & Fisheries Office administrator, as well as several others.
