STX-POSCO ally with steel strategies for shipbuilding
STX Shipbuilding set up a made to order system of steel materials to advance in the LPG carrier field with POSCO. According to STX Shipbuilding, POSCO developed NV2-4 steel thanks to a proposal from STX Shipbuilding.
NV2-4 is strong in low temperature impact tests and is made from high grade steel. It is essential in building LPG tanker carriers because of its strength at low temperatures.
STX Shipbuilding recently started to make LPG carriers, and proposed this steel be used. They are looking to gain orders in the high value added ship market. POSCO accepted the proposal as it will bring in highly profitable orders for them.
Domestic shipbuilders expect the wait period after ordering will shorten to 1 or 2 months from the current 6 months thanks to NV2-4 steel.
STX Shipbuilding and POSCO formed a TFT (Task Force Team) to implement the strategy last year when they started to make NV2-4 steel. A POSCO team visited the STX shipyard in Jinhae several times to gather opinions from shipbuilders and ship owners.
