Pusan Port has handled less container cargoes than Shanghai Port so far this year.
According to KITA (Korea International Trade Association), Pusan Port handled 867,000 TEU cargoes in January, 2004, an increase of 2.3% over the previous January's 848,000 TEU. Meanwhile, Shanghai Port handled 1.08 million TEU cargoes during the same period, increasing 17.2% compared with last January, and further broadening the gap with Pusan Port.
The Shanghai Port Management Committee set their cargo-handling goal at 13.5 million TEU for 2004, an increase of 17.9% over last year's.
Shanghai Port surpassed Pusan Port (10.4 million TEU) with 11.28 million TEU last year, and took third place following Hong Kong Port (20 million TEU) and Singapore Port (18.1 TEU). Pusan Port was outstripped by Shenzen Port, dropping to fifth.
