Shanghai develops 52 container berths
The city of Shanghai officially announced that it would develop Minor Yangshan Port three times larger than the current Pusan Port by 2020. This is the first time that the Chinese government authorized Minor Yangshan Port development plan.
On Dec. 1, Korean shipping companies based in Shanghai said that the port bureau under the city of Shanghai officially invited port industry people from home and overseas, and explained about Yanshan Port, which is under construction, Tonghae Bridge and Njo Port development.
The city of Shanghai revealed that Shanghai would carry its role as hub port for Northeast Asia by absorbing cargoes from Northern China such as Tianjin and Qingdao, which are transshipping through the port of Gwangyang, as well cargoes from the Jang River Delta area.
Shanghai will complete thirty container berths along the 11 km port in Minor Yangshan by 2020 to handle 12.4 million TEU annually.
Clearing its focus to open 9 berths in Yanshan by 2006 for Northern China cargoes, Shanghai is expected to compete with Pusan for Northeast Asian hub status.
An insider from the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries said that the Chinese government seemed to come up with its Minor Yangshan Development Plan out of long term development plans for the Major and Minor Yangshan Port. Other plans for Major Yangshan Port development include development of 22 berths, but have not taken a concrete form yet, he added.
