Largest container ship to ever enter Pusan Port
November 6, the Ilona, owned by MSC Korea Ltd., a 6,750 TEU vessel, became the largest container ship to enter Pusan Port at Gamman wharf, which opened in April 1998.
One wharf insider said, "This calling is a big good opportunity for Pusan Port," and added, "The calling of this large vessel shows the port's capabilities, which is important since the port lost a great deal of prestige during the strikes of the trucker's union, and the crane damage from the typhoon."
Pusan Regional Maritime Affairs & Fisheries Office started dredging Pusan Port in December 2001 for 6,000 TEU class vessels to make port access easier.
According to the Pusan Regional Maritime Affairs & Fisheries Office, the dredging work is continuing for larger ships, and will be completed by the beginning of 2005.
At completion, the Pusan Port water depth will be 15 meters, making port usage much easier for large container ships over 6,000 TEU.
