Container scanners freeze smuggling
Container scanners introduced last October have effectively uncovered containers of contraband disguised as legal imports.
The Pusan ?South Kyungsang Province Customs headquarters stated that the first container scanner was installed on the 7th wharf in the Port of Pusan, with two more installed in Jasundae and Shinsundae terminals in March and May. -
The large x-ray scanners act like an electric-eye to peer inside, allowing quicker and easier discovery of contraband like that already reported to Customs.
So far, they have helped uncover 24 incidents of contraband from unknown origins last year and another 104 incidents in 2003 to the end of August coming. The estimated value of the smuggled goods amounted to 2.67 billion won.
Container scanners cut screening times to one tenth that of manual inspection as well as increase the probability of contraband being discovered.
Customs plans to install another scanner in the Port of Pusan and two more scanners in the Pusan New Port, which is scheduled to open in 2006.
