Wharfage exemption requested
The Ulsan Regional Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Office petitioned the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries to prolong the 50% reduction for wharfage until the end of 2008 when container the dedicated terminal in Ulsan New Port is completed. MOMAF is reducing wharfage for containers by 50% until the end of this year.
Ulsan MOMAF asserted in a recommendation, “Container cargoes are rising since container routes launched in August 1992. However, companies are suffering from increased logistic costs and national competitiveness is weakening as Ulsan borne cargoes have moved to Busan due to weak port facilities in Ulsan Port.”
The local office proposed that the wharfage reduction be kept until the end of 2008 when the four container dedicated berths of the first phase of Ulsan New Port are finished.
Deep-sea going carriers coming into Ulsan Port have been benefited from the 50% wharfage reduction since it was introduced in July 2002.
