HMD, full range of mid-sized PC ships
Hyundai Mipo Dockyard (HMD) named a PC ship on August 26.
The named ship is the last of three 46,000 DWT class vessels that HMD received order for from Admanthos Shipping Agency Inc. in the U.S.A in November 2001.
The ship was named the 'Sinbad' by the ship's owner and is 183 meters long, 32.2 meters wide, 18.8 meters high, and is the largest of the mid-sized PC ships.
Mid-sized PC ship are generally 35,000 DWT ~ 46,000 DWT. HMD primarily made 37,000 DWT vessels.
The company has delivered many mid-sized PC ships (35,000 DWT class -16 vessels, 37,000 DWT class - 34 vessels, 45,000 DWT and 46,000DWT class - 2 vessels each) to ship owners .
HMD aims to be the the world's largest mid-size PC ship builder as they offer a full range of mid-sized PC ships.
Mid-sized PC ships are the latest ship type, first introduced only 6 years ago. In recent years, ship owners have come to prefer these ships for their small hulls and superior mobility when coming alongside berths.
Though their hulls are small, the mid-sized PC ship is a high value added ship type, equipped with expensive special facilities because it transports finished petrochemical goods.
HMD invested heavily in this niche market, producing them since 1996. Now the company is well known to ship owners world wide for the Mipo Tanker.
They hold first place for market share at 43%.
One staff from HMD said, "We stand unchallenged in the world of mid-sized PC ships," and added, "we will try to make high value added PC ships with better know-how."
