HMM receives gigantic containership
Hyundai Merchant Marine received the 5,500 TEU "Hyundai Confidence" from Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) on April 17, 2003 and put the vessel in Asia and Europe trade.
This vessel, its first newly built and delivered one since 2001, measures 265 meters long, 40 meters wide and 20 meters high, twice as large as a football field and 19 meters longer than the 246 meter high '63 Building' in Yeouido. [Note: the '63 Building' is the tallest building in Korea and derives its colloquial name from the number of stories it has, 63.] At a cruising speed of 25.6 knots, it is also a high-speed vessel.
An HMM spokesman said, "Now with a 5,500 TEU in Asia/Europe trade, the company's transportation capacities and service quality is one step further improved."
HMM drew a fair amount of attention by ordering this vessel during a slack season two years ago and now deploying it during a relative boom period.
The container market is sharply becoming more prosperous this year after three long years of hardship. Asia/Europe trade introduced a 150 dollar GRI (General Rates Increase) per TEU from April 1.
HMM expects that the company's main business area, containership transportation, will improve its bottom line with the newly delivered vessel.
HMM is set to receive a 4,700 TEU vessel next year.
