MOMAF asks vessel to communicate in Iraq Sea every 6 hrs
The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries is investigating contingencies for the maritime industry in the event of a US attack on Iraq. An "Emergency Team" composed of MOMAF, the Korea Shipowner's Association and domestic shipping companies would keep in touch with vessels sailing in the Middle East at all times and respond to the evolving situation systematically.
MOMAF also urged shipping companies to be on guard against terror attacks, to obey military orders in the trade area controlled by the US Navy and communicate with sailing vessels in the area every six hours to check in. In emergency situations, such as being attacked, hijacked or detained, MOMAF, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, local embassies and shipping companies will cooperate to resolve the situation.
Oil transports will be guarded by US Navy just as during the Gulf War in 1991 with the help of MOFAT.
With the sharp increase of war-risk insurance charges, vessels operating in the area would like to get help from the government to alleviate the heavy burden for domestic shipping companies. If a war lasted two months, shipping lines would have to pay an additional 26 million dollars. During the Gulf War in 1991, each sailing cost an additional 1 million dollars.
