Kwangyang Port expects 1 mil. TEU in 2002
Kwangyang Port, opened in July. 1998, will reach one million TEU in stevedoring results this year.
December 13, according to MOMAF (The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries), Kwangyang Port handled 994,000 TEU container cargoes by the end of November, and will pass one million TEU container cargoes by the end of this year.
One insider from MOMAF said, "Kwangyang Port is quickly becoming a world class port, Pusan Port and Kwangyang Port, as the central figures in Korea, are paving the way for Korea as a major logistical center in Northeast Asia"
Kwangyang Port handled 33,768 TEU in 1998 (July~December). It handled 417,000 TEU and 642,000 TEU in 1999, and 2000, respectively, and last year handled 855,310 TEU.
Handling of transshipment cargoes, which was only 28,000 TEU in 1999, is expected to hit 335,000 TEU this year in line with the government policy to foster Kwangyang Port as a major cargo transshipment center in Northeast Asia.
MOMAF is looking to see Kwangyang Port handle 9,317,000 TEU by 2011 through further developing the container terminal and additional facilities.
A ceremony will be held December 26 to celebrate Kwangyang? reaching one million TEU. The minister of MOMAF, Kim Ho-Sik, will be in attendance.
