Donghae vessels and cargoes skyrocketing
Vessels and cargoes through ports in Kangwon province increased dramatically coming this year.
Donghae Regional Maritime Affairs and Fisheries revealed on April 4 that the main eastern ports in Kangwon, including Donghae, Mookho, Samchok and Okgye, saw a 23.5% increase in entry and departure vessel numbers with 1,695 ships over last year. Cargo carriage also grew by 10.2% to 7.73 million tons for the same period. Especially, Donghae port, which upgraded its handling capacity, marked a 41% and 9% increase in vessel numbers and cargoes compared to the same period last year, with 632 and 1.06 million tons, respectively.
This increase was attributed to Russian vessels moving to Donghae from Pusan.
An official at the regional agency said that it would focus on stimulating the province’s eastern ports by drawing cargoes from Russia, China and North Korea.
