HHI expects to deliver 1000th ship
Hyundai Heavy Industry (HHI) is expected to deliver its 1,000th vessel.
According to HHI on March 4, the company delivered 980 vessels as of the end of January, of which 930 were merchant ships, and 50 were special carriers including one battleship. HHI is expecting to deliver its 1,000th vessels inside of the next 2 months.
The journey to this record has taken 28 years since HHI produced its first tanker, a 264,000 ton Very Large Crude oil Carrier (VLCC) delivered to the Greek Livanosith Corp. in June 1974. At the time, their first vessel delivery ceremony was broadcast on television with the late president Chung-hee Park participating in the ceremony.
An official at the company said that this will be the first time for any company less than 30 years old to deliver 1,000 vessels. Compared to overseas dockyards that are over 100 years old, 1,000 vessels is not so many, but when viewed in the context of such a relatively young company, it takes on new meaning.
