[ New Large Container Vessel From Odense Steel Shipyard ]
“REGINA MAERSK”, which is the world’s largest container vessel, now
gets company on the oceans. On Saturday April 13 at Odense Steel Ship
yard, Lady Jane Hampel, married to Sir Ronald Hampel, ICI Chemical, na
med the sister vessel “KNUD MAERSK” - Odense Steel Shipyard’s newbu
ilding No. 155
M. S. “KNUD MAERSK”, which has capacity of 6000 twenty-foot equivale
nt container units, is 318 meters long, 42 meters wide and has a draug
ht of 14 meters. A total of 700 forty-foot refrigerated containers can
be connected. This gives a 20% higher capacity than on the largest pu
rpose-built reefer vessel.
M. s. “KNUD MAERSK”’s diesel engine has twelve cylinders that gener
ate 74,640 BHP. The vessel can attain a speed of 25 knots.
The vessel is equipped with moveable stabilizers which counteract roll
ing in rough sea and with thrusters fore and aft which facilitate the
manoeuvring of the vessel. Closed bridge wings which are fully instrum
ented, contribute to quick and safe port calls.
The name has only been used once before in the Maersk Fleet, for a tra
mp vessel which entered the fleet in 1958.
M. s. “KNUD MAERSK” is registered at Odense. The vessel is commanded
by captain Henrik L. Solmer, Svendborg, and the chief engineer is Mog
ens K. Larsen, Esbjerg.
After the naming ceremony, M. s. “KNUD MAERSK”, calls at the Langeli
ne quay in Copenhagen where there will be an ‘open vessel’arrangment
. After this, the vessel will enter into Maersk Line’s service betwee
n Europe and the Far East.
