HMM makes waves all the way to New York
Hyundai Merchant Marine (HMM) is offering the fastest transit time between Pusan, Long Beach and New York string. At a cool 15 days, this service smokes at 12 to 18 percent faster than normal transit times in the trade, which usually take 17 or 18 days.
HMM announced July 31 that it launched inland rail services to carry container cargoes within the continental United States, and shortened sailing transit times between Korea and U.S to 15 days through service improvements, quickening its services by 2 or 3 days over other services.
Recently HMM signed contracts to cooperate with two U.S railroad operators, Burlington Northern Santa Fe and Norfolk Southern, and kicked off the new railroad services to connect the port of Long Beach, a gateway to the U.S. west coast, with the eastern U.S. seaboard. All tolled, this will get cargoes to New York five days faster than other services because it will go through Elkhart and Harrisburg in the Mid West, rather than through Chicago.
HMM stressed that it could provide more stable and exact inland services by avoiding Chicago where there is heavy cargo congestion during peak seasons. And to kill two birds, it will also enjoy increased revenues and superior competitiveness as the entire process cuts costs.
