Hyundai Kamman Terminal Achieves 100 Million TEU
Hyundai Merchant Marine (HMM) announced on July 25 that the HMM Kamman
container terminal handled 100 million TEU containers.
HMM held a "100 million TEU achievement ceremony" in the Kamman termi
nal and shipped the 100 millionth TEU on the 5,551TEU container vessel
"Hyundai Pyojun" bound for Long Beach.
HMM attributed the speed of this achievement to the installment of adv
anced instruments like 3 gantry cranes and 9 transfer cranes, the sett
ing up of a Gate Automation System for checking containers in and out,
operating port automation systems developed by themselves, and conduc
ting operations training overseas.
The Kamman terminal in the Port of Pusan is operated by 4 domestic com
panies, HMM, Hanjin Shipping, Korea Express, and Global Logistics, eac
h company running one berth. It is the first time for one company, HMM
in the Kamman terminal, to exceed 100 million TEU.
Since the HMM Kamman terminal opened in April 1998, it has processed 1
00 million TEU containers during a period of 2 years and 3 months, or
an average of 1,200 TEU containers a day. 100 million TEU containers r
each to about 6,050 km, which is equivalent to ten and a half times th
e length of the Kyungbu express highway, or the number of containers r
equired to transport 300,000,000 twenty inch color TVs.
This terminal is 350m long, and can be called on by a 5,000 TEU vessel
(a very large container vessel). Four HMM container vessels running i
n the Asia/North America and Korea/Russia trade routes call at this te
rminal 4 times a week.
