BLUE STAR PURCHASE OF “PYRMONT BRIDGE” AND CHANGE OF NAME TO “AUSTR
ALIA STAR”
Blue Star Line recently announced that it had purchased the 1250teu co
nro vessel Pyrmont Bridge which it has been operating under charter in
the group’s Bridge Line trade covering the Korea/Japan/China market.
As part of the Group’s continued objective in promoting its significa
nt Australian multitrade interests, the current Bridge Line funnel is
to be changed to the familiar Blue Star Line funnel and Blue Star Line
colours.
The purchase of the vessel was another indication of Blue Star Line’s
continuing strong commitment to the Korea/Japan/China trade sector in
which it is a significant participant in terms of both Northbound and
Southbound cargo.
BLG-Assessment of 1995, a Year with Bright Sides and Dark Sides
Strong growth in automobile handling-growth in container handling did
not meet expectations-conventional general cargo and bulk cargo traffi
c on the decline.
1995 was not a satisfactory year overall for BLG. Appreciable losses w
ere incurred in the handling of conventional general cargo as well as
grain and feed. On the other hand, the enterprise recorded a welcome l
evel of growth in the handling of motor vehicles. There was also sligh
t growth in container traffic, though not satisfactory in magnitude. D
istribution business developed positively.
BLG is currently responding to the growing importance of container tra
ffic by making suprastructure investments. Expansion of Container Ter
minal Ⅲ in Bremerhaven plays a significant role in this connection. T
he extension of the quay by 700 metres or two berths can only be worth
while if at the same time access to Bremerhaven is ensured for large c
ontainer ships of the so called 4th generation, regardless of the tide
s. It is therefore absolutely necessary to deeped the navigable channe
l of the Outer Weser. BLG is confident that deepening of the navigable
channel will be extensively completed at the same time as Container T
erminal Ⅲ.
The development of revenues this year remains a problem for BLG, howev
er. It was not possible for BLG to achieve a positive business result.
Personnel adjustments were therefore unavoidable in 1995.
At the end of year BLG employed roughly 3100 employees, about 200 few
er than in the previous year.
