HMM Became the Owner of the Largest LNG Vessel
Hyundai Merchant Marine (HMM) recently became the owner and operator o
f the world's largest LNG vessel.
HMM held a naming ceremony on 27 June for the 135,000 cubic meter LNG
vessel in the Hyundai Heavy Industry (HHI) shipyard, attended by 150 p
eople including Chung-shik Kim, president of HHI. At the ceremony, Mrs
. Hyeran Hwang, wife of Sung-ryong Hong, Vice-minister of MOMAF, named
the ship "Hyundai Oceanpia". HMM deployed the "Hyundai Oceanpia" in t
he Korea/ Indonesia trade route.
The "Hyundai Oceanpia" is 288 meters long, 48 meters wide, and 23 mete
rs deep. The Moss-type LNG vessel's steam-turbine engine sails it at a
hefty speed of 20.3 knots. The vessel cost HMM 240 billion won. Over
the next 20 years, HMM will use the vessel to transport 1 million tons
of LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) annually to Korea from Indonesia.
Since operating its first LNG vessel in June 1994, this sixth vessel i
n the HMM LNG fleet has pushed HMM to the top among domestic LNG Carri
ers. The HMM LNG vessel is 3 times larger than a football field and th
e company's most expensive commercial vessel, worth over 240 billion w
on.
The new vessel will carry as much LNG as the entire nation uses in 2 -
3 days per sailing.
