[ Total cargo turnover at 1995 level ]
Figures for the first ten months of this year lead us to expect a
total turnover of around 71 million ton in 1996. In other words,
this year’s total will be slightly below the record result of 72
million ton in 1995 but still well above the 1994 result of under 70
million ton. However, the overall economic situation and growth in
world trade indicate that the existing forecast may well prove too
conservative.
General cargo turnover, i.e. container traffic plus conventional
cargo handling, will increase by around 2.5% in 1996. This growth
rate applies equally to incoming and outgoing cargoes, both of which
accounted for around 18.4 million ton. However, the rise in incoming
cargo turnover(around 4%) was significantly higher than outgoing
traffic which only increased by 1%.
General cargo’s share of the Port’s total cargo turnover rose to
just under 52%, thus accounting for more than half for the first time
in the Port’s more recent history.
