Oakland Sees Strong Market in 1999 Poised for Growth
The Port of Oakland finished 1999 with a solid 4.5% overall increase i
n loaded container through-put above 1998 figures. Import cargo volume
was up 2.5% to 448,800TEUs while export cargo volume was up 5.6% to 7
56,400TEUs. The movement of MTY containers remained flat at 353,700TEU
s.
Total container through-put was 1,558,900TEUs at the fourth busiest co
ntainer port in the United States.
“Oakland not only grew its import market during the last two years,”
stated Chuck Foster the Port’s Executive Director, “it retained its
strong export market. We are consisitently achieving our controlled g
rowth objectives while constructing new facilities to meet future dema
nd and opportunities.”
