With the container traffic volume on the North American route reaching an all-time high in 2024, JOOSUNG SEA & AIR, a Korean logistics company specializing in the North American region, has maintained its position as the forwarder handling the most container cargo on the route connecting Korea and the US. According to Descartes Datamyne, a US customs clearance investigation agency, JOOSUNG SEA & AIR handled 42,600 TEU of container cargo exported from Korea to the US last year, maintaining its No. 1 ranking for 7 consecutive years since 2018.
JOOSUNG SEA & AIR, in cooperation with its affiliates BNP JOOSUNG and JOOSUNG Corporation, has taken 3.4% of the export cargo market to the US. This logistics company is working to become a comprehensive logistics company by opening a logistics center in the US with the Busan Port Authority last year. Second place went to Ramses Logistics, which handled 38,000 TEU. Ramses accepted a 12% decrease in performance from the previous year, but maintained its ranking at the same level as the previous year.
CJ Logistics jumped from 4th to 3rd place, achieving 31,000 TEU, a 70% increase. US-based Binex Line recorded 26,000 TEU, a 24% increase last year, but fell from 3rd to 4th place due to CJ Logistics' good performance.
Pyramid Lines and Taewoong Logistics, which ranked 5th and 6th respectively, also reported high growth rates. Pyramid Lines handled 26,400 TEU, which is 1.5 times more than a year ago, and Taewoong Logistics handled 18,200 TEU, which is 66% more.
Last year, the shipping company that carried the most cargo from Korea to North America was Japan's Ocean Network Express (ONE). This shipping company transported 203,000 TEU, which is 26% more than last year, surpassing Korea's HMM to take first place.
Danish shipping company Maersk took second place with 183,000 TEU, which is 10% more. On the other hand, domestic shipping company HMM transported 151,000 TEU, which is 23% less than the previous year.
The shipping companies that saw a decrease in cargo from Korea to the US last year were HMM (3rd), Zim (5th), and COSCO (10th). It is analyzed that the cause is the aggravation of logistics difficulties due to the prolonged Red Sea incident and restrictions on passage through the Panama Canal, as well as the introduction of a strategy to selectively receive high-value cargo. Meanwhile, container cargo exported from Korea to the U.S. last year increased by 11% to 1.26 million TEU, reaching an all-time high.
