[ HJS has ordered what will be the world’s largest containerships.]
Hanjin Shipping, one of South Korea’s leading shipping companies, has
ordered what will be the world’s largest containerships.
Hanjin has signed a contract with group shipyard, Hanjin Heavy Industr
ies for the construction of two 4,790 teu capacity containerships. In
terms of container capacity, the vessels will be slightly larger than
the six Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL) contracted at Mitsubishi
and Samsung in March which will have a capacity of 4,950 teu.
Delivery of the pair is expected during early 1996 and according to Ha
njin Shipping sources, the company is expected to place an order for u
p to four more of these post-panamax vessels during the first quarter
of next year.
All six vessels will be deploy on the transpacific trades, probably in
the recently-introduced Pacific Northwest service, which is being run
independently between Japan, Hong Kong, South Korea and Long Beach an
d Oakland on the US west coast.
