MSC Hosts Sustainability Tour for Customers in Antwerp

Senior sustainability, procurement and supply chain leaders from 12 multinational companies joined MSC in Antwerp, Belgium, last week for a two-day customer sustainability experience.
 
The event provided a rare, behind-the-scenes look at the practical actions MSC is taking to enable sustainable supply chains and support clients with their ‘scope 3’ (indirect) emissions and broader climate ambitions.
 
During tours of key operational sites, customers were fascinated by the breadth of MSC’s sustainability initiatives that are deeply embedded in core operations and delivering tangible results. They also showed a keen interest in how MSC is working with suppliers and partners to ensure end-to-end sustainability along the length of supply chains, sparking new conversations for deeper collaboration and partnership.
 
Scope 3 emissions, which can account for more than 70% of a business’s carbon footprint1, are amongst the hardest to tackle as they lie outside a company’s direct control. Yet the changing climate, net zero targets and growing regulatory and stakeholder pressure are pushing businesses to take greater responsibility for their value chains. As a result, many are turning to their logistics partners not just to advance sustainability goals, but to provide transparency on their social and environmental performance as well as evidence of progress.
 
As a key part of customers’ supply chains, MSC sees itself as a partner in decarbonization and an enabler of their climate targets and ambitions
 
MSC’s maritime decarbonization efforts focus on fleet, fuels and frameworks. For example, MSC is modernizing its fleet, welcoming over 150 new dual-fuel LNG-capable vessels, and improving energy efficiency on existing vessels.
 
On fuels, MSC offers customers its lower-emission Biofuel Solution and is partnering with energy providers and technology developers to scale up net-zero alternatives.
 
On frameworks, MSC is supporting the development of the ‘infrastructure’ needed to deliver net zero shipping and logistics. This involves a wide range of initiatives such as collaborating with energy suppliers to scale-up availability of new fuels, training seafarers to safely operate new generation vessels, and engaging with policy makers to create an enabling regulatory environment.
 
Across its non-maritime operations, initiatives include reducing direct emissions from terminals, focusing on intermodality and increasing route efficiency.
