“Hanjin Rome”, the sixth 5,300 TEU newbuilding put into Pendulum Ser
vice
In 1996, Hanjin Shipping was the first Korean carrier to introduce the
5,300 TEU-class container vessel. On Wednesday August 19, 1998, Hanji
n took delivery of its sixth 5,300 TEU post-panamax container vessel f
rom Hanjin Industries at the Yongdo Shipyard in Pusan, Korea.
Named “Hanjin Rome”, the vessel will serve in the company’s PS-Pend
ulum service, calling at the ports in Asia, Europe and North America.
On its introductory voyage, the vessel departed from Pusan to call on
Hong Kong before making its full rotation. The calling rotation of PS-
PDM 1 service is as follows: Rotterdam-Hamburg-Felixtowe-Le Havre-Sing
apore-Hong Kong-Kaohsiung-Long Beach-Oakland-Tokyo-Osaka-Pusan-Hong Ko
ng-Port Kelang-Colombo-Rotterdam.
The 5,300 TEU containership is equipped with the latest maritime techn
ology for efficient performance. The new container vessel comes with a
highly fuel efficient 74,700 BHP Sulzer engine that is capable of ope
rating at a speed of more than 26 knots. Hanjin Rome with a length of
279 meters, a width of 40 meters and a depth of 24 meters ensures maxi
mum carrying capacity with the lowest operating costs.
The introduction of the new vessel is in line with Hanjin’s continuin
g policy of modernizing its fleet and offering its customers excellent
and personalized service. With an average age of 3 years, Hanjin curr
ently has one of the youngest fleets among its competitos. Hanjin will
introduce its seventh 5,300 TEU-class container vessel, Hanjin Oslo,
this December.
