HMM’s largest container ship calls at Port of Hamburg
The giant container ship "HYUNDAI BRAVE" of the Korean shipping company Hyundai Merchant Marine (HMM) docked at the Port of Hamburg for the first time on February 14th.
HMM’s largest container ship was built by Hyundai Heavy Industries, which is part of the HMM group, in Ulsan. The 8,566 TEU ship started its maiden voyage from Ningbo (China) on January 17, 2008. Loaded with export goods for Northern Europe, the ship, which is employed in the Far East/Europe liner service "SCX" of the New World Alliance shipping consortium, headed for the ports of Shanghai, Chiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Zeebrugge, Thamesport and finally Hamburg, Europe’s most important sea port for trade with the Far East and China.
On the return trip the SCX also serves the Port of Rotterdam. The Hyundai Brave was discharged and loaded at the HHLA Container Terminal Altenwerder (CTA).
The container ship giant, built at the Hyundai Heavy Industries shipyard, has a length of 339 meters, a breadth of 45.6 meters and a slot capacity of 10,062 TEU (20-foot standard containers). The maximum draught of the Hyundai Brave is 14.5 m.
The captain of the Panama-flagged Hyundai Brave, I. G. Jong, was welcomed on the bridge of the giant freighter by Uwe Claassen, Director of the Nautische Zentrale Hamburg, Port of Hamburg Marketing Chairman Dr. Jurgen Sorgenfrei, representatives of the local HMM agency (Hyundai Merchant Marine (Deutschland) GmbH), Managing Director J. Y. Choi, and General Manager Gunter Bold, as well as by HMM representatives H. S. Yun and Richard Min.
On the occasion of the container ship’s maiden voyage, the port representatives presented him with a gift of the Hamburg Admiralty coat of arms and a book. Early in the morning of February 16, the Hyundai Brave left for its return journey back to Singapore via Rotterdam. <Korea Shipping Gazette>
