Gwangyang Port narrowly increases cargoes last month
In spite of typhoon Maemi, the Port of Gwangyang handled slightly more cargoes as compared with September of last year.
The Korea Container Terminal Authority announced October 4 that Gwangyang Port handled 102,828 TEU last month for an increase of 7.1% in comparison with the same period of last year (905,998 TEU), and handled 14% more cargoes than last month.
For the year to date, the Port handled 871,259 TEU by September of this year, for an increase of 9% compared with 798,967 TEU during the same period of last year.
One insider from the KCTA said, "There weren't any cargo transfers in Pusan Port container wharf due to damage from Maemi," and "rather, the port shows a steady increase due to the end of the truckers' strike on the first of last month and the relatively low amount of damage caused by Maemi."
Meanwhile, although the rate is increasing, concerned organizations like the Regional Maritime Affairs & Fisheries Office are concerned that Gwangyang Port won't reach its goal of 1.5 millions TEU, its original plan set for this year.
