KFTA strongly against sudden hike for air cargoes
The Korea Foreign Trade Association expressed strong objections to raising the minimum charges for air cargoes departing from Korea from August 1st. The association proclaimed that Korean Air abruptly hiked the minimum charges by 13% for cargoes destined for overseas locations (5.5% rise for US bound cargoes) without any prior consultation with shippers, and asked for a repeal.
The association said that air borne cargoes increased slowed beyond expectations and some trades even decreased.
?id-sized and small shippers who treat product samples, small express cargoes and semi-conductor memories, will suffer from these rates being passed on to them. To support them, the rate hike should be repealed,?said an official from the KFTA.
The association also pointed out that the Ministry of Construction and Transportation should check whether the airliners consulted with major shippers or not before sanctioning rate hikes as it is one of most important costs for shippers.
The Korea Foreign Trade Association worried about the rate hike spreading out to other airliners and express cargo handling companies such as DHL.
