Hanjin shipping introduces HANBOSS
Hanjin Shipping announced that in order to cope with changing circumstances, they started a new system named HANBOSS (Hanjin Bunker Optimum Supply System), which would automatically estimate fuel supply requirements and return information on where to refuel and how much to refuel.
"Research for this system started last October and now it will be used to minimize fuel costs by using information from navigation schedules, current fuel levels, oil prices by port and the amount of cargoes. First of all, it will be utilized for the containers that have many ports of call and need more fuel. The container section is made of 72 ships (20 wholly owned ships and 52 chartered ships), has 55 regular lines and uses up 2.3 million tons of fuel," they added.
Fuel costs are different at various ports, for example, Pusan $200 per ton, LA $176, NY $196, Singapore $192, and Rotterdam at $146. They expect great improvements in fuel costs and productivity by using the system to predict the best places to refuel and only refueling the minimum required at more expensive ports.
A Hanjin official said, "The new system is going to greatly improve our working efficiency."
He added that they are also looking into developing other systems to improve productivity elsewhere.
