KSA cautions against strait of Malaka terror
The Korea Shipowner's Association advised November 15 that domestic ocean-going liners should develop strategies themselves as international experts' warn that the possibility of terrorism at the strait of Malaka is growing.
The Korea Shipowner's Association pointed out that the number of pirates reported from January to September in this year all over the world hit 217 cases according to data from the International Chamber of Commerce and Industry. It added that similar cases might also occur at the strait of Malaka.
The association requested strengthening security plans at the nations neighboring the strait of Malaka such as Singapore, Indonesia, etc.
According to the association, there are 160 domestic ocean-going ships there such as LNG tankers, bulk carriers and container ships every year.
The association added that experts worried about damage to world economy if pirates strike there.
Although the strait of Malaka is a narrow and long seaway 800 kilometers long, several tens of kilometers wide, many pirates have made frequent appearances there over the centuries because its high ship traffic.
