Sharp Increase in Container Cargo Bound for North America
The amount of container cargo from South Korea to North America has in
creased continuously from the beginn ing of this year. According to th
e related association, the container cargo transported from South Kore
a to North America during the first quarter of this year was recorded
as 125,947 twenty foot equivalent units (teu), an increase of 15.7%.
Specifically, Hanjin Shipping Co. handled 25,716 teu, a 20.42% market
share, and Hyundai Merchant Marine Co. followed with 21,488 teu, a 17.
00% share of the market. Meanwhile, Choyang Shipp ing Line transported
7,232 teu, garnering 5.74% of the market. The total volume transporte
d by the three Korean flag carriers combined reached 54,436 teu, 43.22
% of the total.
ZIM Lines, Israel's carrier transported 10,490 teu, capturing 8.33% of
the market and American President Lines (APL) transported 10,359 teu,
capturing 8.22%. Maersk-Sealand also shared in the boom with 9,851 te
u, a market share of 7.82%.
In addition, local cargo transported in the Pacific South West (PSW) r
eached a volume of 39,706 teu, up 13.8% compared to the same period t
he previous year. Local cargo in the Pacific North West (PNW) region
has decreased to 2,866 teu.
