THE ULTRA-LARGE CONTAINERSHIP OF P&O NEDLLOYD ENTERING THE SERVICE
The first one of a series of four 6,600TEU containerships which are no
w under construction for P&O Nedlloyd in Japan was completed and start
ed the service as of June 8.
The ship, P&O Nedlloyd Southampton, which had been constructed at Kure
Dockyard of Ishikawajima-Haima Heavy Industries Co. was deployed in L
oop 1 of the six Asia-Europe loop services offered by the Grand Allian
ce of P&O Nedlloyd, Nippon Yusen Kaisha, Hapag Lloyd, Oriental Oversea
s Container Line and Malaysia International Shipping Corporation.
With a tonnage of 80,942 grt, it measures 299.9 meters in overall leng
th and is 42.8 meters wide. Capable of cruising at 24.65 knots, it is
powered by a Diesel United-made Sulzer 12RTA96C main engine with an ou
tput of 89,640 ps, the largest propulsive machinery of its kind in the
world.
P&O Nedlloyd is slated to take delivery of the remaining three vessels
, the P&O Nedlloyd Kobe, and P&O Nedlloyd Kowloon, in June, August and
September of this year. All the newbuildings will be commissioned in
the Grand Alliance’s Europe Loop 1 Service, joining NYK’s five 5,800
TEU ships now plying in the trades.
