[ Maersk Started New Container Service in Bremerhaven ]

The CHASTINE MAERSK was the first vessel of a new Maersk container ser
vice connecting Northern Europe directly with some destinations in the
South of North America and several ports on the westcoast of South Am
erica. In Germany the only port of call is Bremerhaven. This was decid
ed due to the strong position of this port for transatlantic traffic a
nd the quality of the BLG Container Terminal Bremerhaven. The handling
figures of the terminal, situated directly on the North Sea coast, ro
se by 10.5 percent to more than 1.7 million containers(TEU) in 1997. W
ithin the first quarter of this year an increase of 16 percent has bee
n achieved.
The rotation of Maersk’s new liner service with weekly departures inc
ludes the ports of Bremerhaven, Rotterdam, Le Havre, Charleston, Freep
ort, Miami, Cartagena, Baranquilla, Manzanillo, Buenaventura, Manta, C
allao, Arica, San Antonio, Guayaquil and Puerto Limon.
