Automatic welding robot for SUS pipes introduced
An automatic welding robot invented by DSME was recently unveiled. The robot was designed to improve welding productivity for SUS (Steel Use Stainless) pipes.
The Mechatronics & Factory Automation R&D Institute, LNGC Production Team 1, and the Welding Engineering R&D Team, all of whom were involved in the development of the robot, gave a demonstration of the automatic welding robot on the 19th of February.
The automatic welding system for SUS pipes is a first for the domestic shipbuilding industry.
The robot is expected to double productivity. In terms of quality, this method has shown the welding quality is comparable to manual welding. Additionally, a lack of high-skilled welders in this area is no longer a concern.
Robot welding is now being used for SUS pipes with a diameter of about 400mm to 600mm; they are used in pump mast manufacturing. The inventors expect the robot to also be used for welding on smaller pipes in the near future. <Korea Shipping Gazette>
