Cargo discharging capacity at the ports of Busan and Inchon expanded

During the second half of this year, cargo handling capacity in Busan
and Inchon will most likely be expanded by 11.3 percent over the last
year.
According to the Korea Maritime and Port Administration, it is antici-
pated that annual appropriate stevedoring capacity will be increased by
9,965,000 tons in connection with the newly built 26 berths through
the expasion of the 7th quay in Busan port and construction of the 6th
quay of Inchon port. Therefore, appropriate stevedoring capability of
two ports around the end of this year will reach 97,954,000 tons, up
11.3 percent over 87,989,000 tons.
Busan District Maritime and Port Administration said they are planning
to finish the development project of eastern area of Kamchun within
late December when there will be twenty new berths and thereby its
annual capacity will reach 6,385,000 tons.
As a matter of fact, the development plan of the port was confirmed in
November of 1978 but afterwards it was suspended due to the conflict
of interests with Busan city government in respect to establishing drain
system. However, following various difficulties and discussions, this
development project has been resumed this January and in the end,
it will be completed like the above.
Moreover, Busan District Maritime and Port Administration will complete
their expansion project of the current 7th berth within this year, when
the appropriate berths will be increased to 7 from the present 4 and
then the annual cargo handling capacity will reach 3,490,000 tons f
rom the current 2,410,000 tons. Under the circumstances, the whole cargo
handling capacity at the port of Busan will reach 59,515,000 tons around
the end of this year , up 14.3 percent over 52,050,000 tons at present.
In the meanwhile, Inchon District Maritime and Port Administration are
planning to complete the sixth quay within this year when there will
be three berths altogether, one 50,000 tons handling berth and two 30,
000 tons berths.Consequently around the end of this year, annual cargo
handling capacity of Inchon port will be increased by 7 percent to 38,439,
000 tons from the present 34,939,000 tons rised.
