According to Yeosu Re gional Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Office, in 2005 Yeosu Port and Gwangyang Port handled 182,000,000 tonnes, up 5% compared to 2004.
Cargoes included oil of 79,000,000 tonnes, iron ore of 28,000,000 tonnes, iron of 14,000,000 tonnes, soft coal of 13,000,000 tonnes, cement of 3,700,000 tonnes, and sand of 1,000,000 tonnes.
Cargo increases came from Gwanyang Port? LNG pier which handled an additional 700,000 tonnes and from container cargoes increases.
On the other hand, the number of ships through the port stood at about 54,000 ships, down 1,000 compared to 2004. This was attributed to the general trend towards larger vessels.
Yeosu MOMAF said, ?his year, we expect 195,000,000 tonnes, up 6% compared to last year, considering the petrochemical pier starts in March and continuing increases of container cargoes.?
