[Domestic Ship Export Orders See 2.8% Decline During 1996]

Domestic shipyards received export orders for 142 ships(6.93 million
g/t) last year, down 2.8 percent from the previous year, the Korea
Shipbuilders’ Association(KSA) said.
The drop was due to foreign shipping companies’ reluctance to build
vessels for fear of an industry slowdown, the KSA recently said.
Despite the drop in orders, domestic ship construction last year
totaled 7.74 millon g/t, compared with more than 5.66 million g/t in
1995.
