Nakpo wharf safety upgraded in Kwangyang Port
Nakpo wharf in Kwangyang Port has been released from hazardous facility status.
Yeosu Regional Maritime & Fisheries Office upgraded Nakpo wharf at a cost of 6.2 billion won between 2002 and 2003. Nakpo wharf was reclassified in March as C class after a security examination last December and released from its hazardous facility designation, including 2 berths for 20,000 ton class vessels and 2 berths for 50,000 ton class vessels.
According to the regional office, the third berth in Nakpo wharf will have its capacity increased from 20,000 tons to 30,000 tons with an expansion at a cost of 3.2 billion won, which is expected to contribute to better port management and relieve cargo jam.
Nakpo wharf was originally constructed with 5 berths between 1976~79, but classified as a D class area, hazardous facility, after a security examination in 2001. The wharf was prohibited from accepting vessels over a certain tonnage, irrespective of carrying capacity.
One insider at Yeosu Regional Maritime & Fisheries Office said, "We will do our best for security management of the facility through continuous repairs and checks."
