Pusan steps back to fifth place
Pusan dropped astern of Shenzen in handling accumulated container volumes as well as monthly figures, marking itself as the fifth largest container port in the world. Shenzen surpassed it last July kept its place firmly.
The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (MOMAF) revealed Pusan handling container volumes to be 880 thousand TEU, rising 10% over the same period last year. This figure led total volumes in Pusan to 8.56 million TEU up to October.
In the mean time, the China Transport Ministry revealed in its homepage that Shanghai handled 1.02 TEU in October and Shenzen 1.1 million TEU, breaking the monthly top record. Shanghai accumulated 9.23 million TEU up to October and Shenzen totaled 8.73 million TEU.
Shanghai and Shenzen outstripped Pusan in accumulated volumes in July and October, marking themselves as the third and fourth largest in container volumes following Hong Kong and Singapore.
An insider from MOMAF said that Shenzen is growing tremendously, absorbing Hong Kong cargoes as well. It would be difficult for Pusan to surpass Shanghai and Shenzen again, he said.
