U.S. BCBP introduces the 'smart container'
The Bureau of Customs and Border Protection, BCBP announced plans for smoothing and strengthening customs procedures with "smart container" development.
Robert C. Bonner, the BCBP administrator said, "The ministerial and civil organizations are experimenting with detection equipment which discovers container tampering by private companies and informs the proper authority," at C-TPAT (Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism) held in San Francisco.
To this, ocean containers with this equipment will have quicker customs clearance.
C-TPAT was introduced 2 years ago, private business, including carriers and importers, will have faster customs clearance instead of while maintaining strict security.
C-TPAT is in operation with 4,300 companies in the U.S..
The BCBP intends to open C-TPAT to overseas companies and has already opened C-TPAT to Mexican companies.
Robert C. Bonner, the BCBP administrator, announced that cargoes delivered to C-TPAT member importers through C-TPAT member company transportation will start with one port participating in the CSI (Container Security Initiative), and will be given the green light.
He added, "We will give the same benefit as C-TPAT member companies to companies using these smart containers."
He also said, "We will soon widely implement this smart container technique, but we won't force its use."
