Low T/S cargo handling results of domestic ports
Domestic ports handle less transshipment cargoes than usual at competing ports such as Singapore, Hong Kong, and Taiwan.
MOMAF announced September 29 that the Port of Pusan handled 1,714,000 TEU of transshipment cargoes this year, an increase of 23% over the same period last year.
But to put things in perspective, Singapore managed 6,408,000 TEU for the same period, 3.7 times that of Pusan. And Hong Kong handled 3,462,000 TEU, more than double that of Pusan.
Kaohsiung Port in Taiwan managed 2,016,000 TEU, still well ahead of transshipment cargoes through Pusan.
One MOMAF shipping logistics department insider said, "Rival countries try to attract transshipment cargoes because they can reap about 220 dollars per TEU in stevedoring charges, port dues for cargoes, terminal charges, transportation charges, etc." He added, "domestic ports are not as accommodating as Singapore or Hong Kong, and are consequently less competitive. To overcome this, we are planning several programs such as a 20% reduction in port facilities fees for transshipment cargoes that enter domestic ports, and construction of the New Pusan Port and Kwangyang Port"
